  1.        Information on the Capital Area SysOps Association  (CASA)

  4.      The Capital Area SysOps Association,  better  known  as  CASA,  was
  5. formed  in  1986  for the purpose of bringing Washington area SysOps and
  6. interested individuals together.  CASA  is  a  social  organization  and
  7. support group of computer hobbyists and professionals that meets monthly
  8. for  a  technical  interchange,  which includes new ways to approach old
  9. issues many SysOps (and SysOp wannabe's) face.  Comprising more than 100
  10. active members, CASA is an international organization now spanning North
  11. America,  Europe  and Asia.  CASA does not attempt to regulate SysOps or
  12. police bulletin boards,  but  it  is  strongly  opposed  to  illegal  or
  13. unethical acts taking place on or connected to a BBS.

  15.      CASA members gather on the second Saturday of each month for  a  3-
  16. hour  luncheon  meeting, rotating meeting locations between Maryland and
  17. northern  Virginia.   A  monthly  CASA  meeting  usually   consists   of
  18. introductions  of members,  guests and visitors,  announcements,  and an
  19. Open Forum discussion giving area SysOps an opportunity  to  broach  new
  20. ideas,  concepts,  hardware/software queries and other topics with their
  21. peers.  After lunch and general socializing,  the latter portion of  the
  22. meeting  is  usually  devoted to a prominent guest speaker with whom the
  23. CASA SysOps have expressed an interest in hearing.  Dress is casual  and
  24. the  atmosphere  of  the  meetings  is  always  entertaining and upbeat,
  25. topical,  lively  and  informative,   often  provocative  and  sometimes
  26. controversial.

  28.      In  addition  to  the  monthly  meetings,  CASA  provides a monthly
  29. newsletter mailed to all members,  offers free access  to  the  official
  30. CASA  Members  Conference  on  the  Virginia  Connection  BBS,  and  has
  31. arrangements with several companies and shareware  authors  who  provide
  32. member  discounts on selected products.  CASA members also offer support
  33. to each other  in  time  of  need.  Guest  speakers  occasionally  bring
  34. substantive  door  prizes  or  give  special discounts to members at the
  35. meetings.  Although geared predominantly to SysOps,  CASA  meetings  are
  36. open  to individuals interested in issues relating to SysOps.  This is a
  37. wonderful opportunity for BBS enthusiasts to put a face with the name of
  38. the SysOp who runs some of your favorite boards!

  40.      CASA membership fees include a one-time initiation fee of $10, plus
  41. annual dues of $6 (prorated from the month you join to the  end  of  the
  42. year.)  CASA believes in the "try-before-your-buy" concept; visitors are
  43. welcome to attend their first meeting without obligation to join  to see
  44. whether CASA is the right group for them.

  57.      The announcement of any upcoming CASA meeting  including  location,
  58. date (second Saturday),  time, place, guest speaker and main topic, will
  59. usually be posted about one week  in  advance  of  the  meeting  on  The
  60. Virginia Connection, in the SysOp Conferences carried on RelayNet (RIME)
  61. and MetroLink, and other selected boards in the Washington DC area.
